If I were to enlighten someone about our hobby, and try to persuade them why they should get into the hobby, how would I explain about what is fun in this hobby?

    Hi Eric, I have watched many of your video's since the inception of this You Tube channel, I admire your exemplary synopsis of new, old, existing gear and your candid approach. Very appreciated, and educational let alone fun. So just my opinion, I have operated radio's for the past 30 yrs, " I have never had time to acquire a license, regardless of my experience, education and work related radio experience. I would LOVE to have time to go take the test which I am sure I could pass with flying colors. Long before the INTERNET/computers everything was dependent on RADIOS for communication especially in Federal Law Enforcement, hell we had a RADIO room which had the very best gear the tax payer could buy, the best oscilloscopes, etc. That all started to change around the year 2005. The best opinion I can offer is make it so the Technicians License is available to "ALL" , a 19 yr old will NEVER EVER have an interest given the multitude of Internet APPS that provision the same results with very little effort. YOUR opinion is accurate, spot on, and practical, this analogous to many other drivers in life i.e. Jewelry, elderly people still like jewelry, kids today would cherish a tattoo or an IPHONE over a piece of jewelry, the business will only last until the last elderly person is alive to buy an item, same goes for HAM RADIO, my Icom 705 and Kenwood D75 peak my interest all day long, however " when the old is gone, this industry will collapse, another analogy is a telescope, hell it took brains to see a dam thing in the sky, today with the cameras and autonomous computer it will locate an object in living color, gone are the days of talent, so goes the market, nobody needs an expensive mount or telescope, its all in a tiny affordable setup aka a computer with a lens. TO REITERATE, YOU WANT TO ATTRACT YOUTH, NEW BLOOD, YOU HAVE GOT TO INCENTIVISE THEM WITH A TECHNICIANS LICENSE THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE THEM TO GET TESTED, THEN AND ONLY THEN WHEN THEY GET A TASTE OF "WOW" MAKING A GLOBAL CONTACT OR ACKNOWLEDGING ITS FUN, ITS CHALLENGING PERHAPS THAT WILL HAVE THEM PURSUE A GENERALS LICENSE, BUT THIS HOBBY IS ON BORROWED TIME, YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE AGE BRACKET I AM ONE OF THOSE SENIOR CITIZENS. THE BOY SCOUTS DO OFFER SOME DEGREE OF COM'S /HAM RADIO BUT THEY ARE A FRACTION OF THE YOUNG POPULATION. MAKE IT COOL, BY OFFERING IT VERSUS DEMANDING A CERTAIN STANDARD BE MET FIRST. GRANTED PROTOCOL IS IMPORTANT BUT within the next decade there will be a decline in HAMS around the world. Just my opinion, to recap, keep up the outstanding work, I admire your enthusiasm as well as your devotion to the hobby. One last point to note, having belonged to many a Ham Radio Forum over the past decade, I cannot tell you how many times I have encountered people my age or older that simply REFUSE to converse at a level that is worthy of interest. I do not know if old age brings out poor dispositions or shitty attitudes but the majority simply FAIL miserably to educate with chastising other members. Its not good for business, A number 1 A Hole to abbreviate it, I can see why so many might get turned off, you ask a simple question you get a ridiculous convoluted response that Albert Einstein would roll his eyes at. Well in summation, your truly an Ambassador for this HOBBY and best advice is ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS. God Bless You... Joe

These young people have smart phones which communicate via voice, text, video, various platforms, e-mails, still images and now AI. I love to make contacts across states and countries and continenta. We need to refocus the material to license radio operators. Young people are much less technial /electronics inclined than years back. The radio testing material has not evolved over the years to fit our younger generations. The materials are heavily focused on electronics. The material needs to be focused on how to create radio operators. Need to relax testing procedures as well. We make it more difficult to get a radio license than to get a drivers license, which is a lot more dangerous. We teach people how to drive a car and follow the law. When getting a drivers license nothing is tought about the engines or pistons or vehicle lubricants. We just need to drive the car and folllow the laws. We do not need three government officials approving your driving test. The same concept needs to be applied to radio operations. If after you are are a radio operator you have interest on electronics, then one can take additional courses.. We are our worst enemies by creating so many obstacles and teaching and testing materials that keep away future Radio Operators.

  • @gerardorinconke8rrg533
    @gerardorinconke8rrg533 3 дні тому

    License testing materials is by far the biggest problem. We need to graduate radio operators, not electronic technicians. The testing materials is full of electronics that are not needed to be a radio operator. The material is very intimidating for non technical inclined people. Refocus the testing materials on how to create radio operators, drop the majority of electronics, and we will get an immediate increase in students and new hams.

    Eric, I agree, brother! I have been a Ham for 40 years. But have you seen Gen Z's interest in anything other than a cell phone? What needs to happen is for every Club across the country to go into recruitment mode. Clubs need an active training plan. They need to be involved in the community. It is a struggle, and that struggle is genuine. As President of my local club, we have youth in our club and an 11-year-old Extra. However, we still need growth and be proactive as a club. His observations are borne out by statistics that show a widening age gap in the hobby for the exact reasons he cites. According to the ARRL, the average age is 68 with Techs averaging at a sprightly 52 - no offense but yikes! Other sources including casual observations by @HRC just reinforce this. We need influencers and clubs to educate and excite older operators about the Internet and digital technologies, and manufacturers to create products that appeal to today's young Internet-native makers. This is absolutely doable. Thanks for this important call to action. 73 de John.

    One thing to remember is that even tge Narrow FM mode is too wide to legally use below 29.000 MHz. Also, a ham with a Tech is not allowed to run AM or FM on 10 meters. This radio is fine for General & above in the USA. Tech licensees need to go with a rig that will run SSB/CW/Digital... De WB2VUO

    They sell short premade braided grounding straps which is about 1" - 1.5" wide, which looks like multilayer fabric. That is the best way to provide a solid RF based grounding / ground plane / counterpoise on any vehicle. I bought a roll of about 25 feet many years and I custom size-to-cut on each of my ham projects. You can cut them using regular electrician's snips but the ends will start to fray over time and look ugly also. So I just put solder at the end so they stay put. You can then poke a hole at the end and put metal eyelets on them where you will use a star washer to screw it down directly to the metal part of the vehicle with dielectric grease. Perfection!

    As a originally licensed in my 20's now in my 40's here are my ideas. The first and biggest issue is the licensing system. It needs a fundamental re-write. There are too many people getting their tech license only to find there's no activity on 2m in their are and they get discouraged. Take a look at the Canadian licensing system, the basic test with an 80% score gets you 250w on all HF bands. The advanced gets you the ability to run a repeater or sponsor a club along with a few other things. Some similar system is needed to get people on the air with the ability to work all the bands and all the modes from day 1. The license tests need to be moved online. Maybe attach a small $2-5 fee for processing to keep people from just spamming attempts to pass. There's no reason you can't do the test online and have a call sign within a couple of minutes of passing. To facilitate this a phone app could be created that both allows practice test and the real test when you feel ready. A HF license means ALL of HF, the idea you need an extra class license to work the different parts of the band is archaic. A good promotional campaign, ideally by a 3rd party ad agency, needs to be created to make ad-videos targeting a younger audience. No one in the video should appear to be over the age of 35. We have too many news stories of a silver haired senior sitting beside their radio rambling along about how they helped in an emergency. That doesn't work, we need something new and sexy. More outreach in schools. Most kids don't even know ham radio is a thing. No one over the age of 35 should be allowed in schools to be able to talk to kids about it. Getting teachers involved to be able to incorporate radio into science class would be a good idea. A loaner program for equipment that can go from school to school would be helpful. This leads to another idea. Temporary demo licenses. Finding a way to get a temporary callsign for teachers and/or students to get on the air and get a taste of what radio is all about for a ~30 day period. Maybe that could be limited to 2m/70cm but would be a great way to let people try the hobby. Field day needs an overhaul. The points (or at least a multiplier) should be added to the number of new people you get on the air or that pass a license test at your field day site. Sure it's fun to get on the air but I hear all sorts of stories about how visitors to field day sites are completely ignored (as seen on Reddit). Field day should also happen 2-4 times a year so there are more opportunities for public participation. That's it for now.

    68 year old here. Getting into amateur radio when you are young has always been difficult. I can tell you what young people won’t understand! Showing them a rig like in your video won’t impress them. It does nothing that they can’t do themselves with a smart phone. Give them a bunch of pigtailed components. Teach them to solder and how to make a chassis and make their own antenna from what they have available at home. Teach them to code and how to customise software and firmware. Radio clubs and societies are generally bad for young persons as they cater for their members, not the young. Clubs should have a stock of general coverage receivers that they can loan out. Compile a list of frequencies used locally. As in ‘listen on this frequency at this time and you will hear this’. Make contact with local schools and offer to do a presentation. Include some simple projects e.g. a crystal radio that the students can build - NOT a kit from the internet, use as much stuff that is available locally - a real breadboard, wire from an old transformer etc.. The emphasis should be on ‘hands on’. Stuff, NOT “look I can talk to the world” - they can already do that! Good Luck. De John VK4VT.

    The hobby no longer offers incentives for the youth. I have 4 adult children. They all have 0 interest. They ask questions about the bands how things work and how they can get licensed. This is the point when they lose interest. They also tell me the radios cost a great deal of money. This is where we are losing people's interest in this hobby. I love every aspect of this hobby. I have gotten people involved in this wonderful hobby by giving demos of it in action. I guess it is a niche crowd-no cell phones are involved. I guess I am with you Eric 100%.

    I have used dipoles and a 3 ele tribander for years. Got hamsticks 4 years ago and use them as verticals, horizontal and vertical dipoles, and multiples on a plate for a multiband wspr station. I have always found them to be within 1 db on both xmit and receive to various Websdrs all over US and Australia against EFHW's , full sized verticals and dipoles and even a Magloop which did poorly. For mobile, base or most anything the Hamsticks are awesome as verts or dipoles. As a vertical they get a bit more noise but just lay it more as a horizontal and be surprised.

I've gotten to meet some really great folks that teach me something new . its amazing .

    I belonged to the Air Cadets when I was growing up & we had a radio shack (part of optional projects segment), but many those of who did it, were into CB (& associated juvenile antics) which didn't really work because no one during my time seemed to know how to use the ham kit, which probably was pretty good for the day (for a cash struck youth group in the early 1980's) so it was a bust. In the mid 90's, I got a Alinco DJF1 which the hang/para gilding community used to use on 143.??? - a band ignored by the regulators with the rationale of safety.. At the time, even with my limited knowledge, I was aware that once again what I was using was pearls before swine, haha - so much extra functionality that I had no idea how to leverage. Recently I got into UHF CB (in New Zealand on the ring of fire where we enjoy tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides et al) for civil preparedness. I was going to attend a local hand cram about a year ago, got the test questions - & was so out of my depth. Not sure how challenging the US test is (notarubicon made it out to be a cakewalk . However, his limited radio interest is GMRS for offroading, so not really bringing much to the hobby beyond amusing edutainment), but here in the shaky isles you had to be able to know formula for all sorts well beyond V=IR. "ffs, henries? you guys making this 5h1t up". Point being, only youngsters here who have the technical background are going to be able to do the exam - a lot of young hams are I suspect are electrical engineers. When trying to find the free flight channel, I found a similar "state of Ham channel" from the UK which might give you more food for thought - ua-cam.com/video/aR5-7BV814c/v-deo.html - Pretty interesting channel tbh. The other problem is, on FB groups where aspirational curious newbies try to educate themselves, the "Sad Hams" - I suspect a lot are younger hams who having got their licenses are lording over people who would like to get into the hobby, & are not doing the pastime any favours whatsoever. If you read this far, top marks for patience, & appreciate your honest "wart's n all" video. "10-4 or whatever it is you say" ;)

    The fact that I can get on hf and with 50w and a 17' whip in my backyard.....I can talk to several different countries... and it doesn't require the grid to do so!
